Commotion as pedestrian dies in accident
There was commotion in Mzuzu on Wednesday after a taxi hit a pedestrian to death along the Orton Chirwa Highway.
Witnesses alleged that the taxi driver was speeding while trailing another vehicle. They said the vehicle ahead of him suddenly slowed down to branch off to the banks and in trying to avoid collision, the taxi driver veered to the right where he hit a pedestrian crossing the road.
Due to the impact, the victim was flung in the air and landed on another car before falling to the ground, according to police.
The taxi driver was arrested immediately after the accident.
Mzuzu Police Station spokesperson Paul Tembo identified the driver as Webster Mkandawire, 21, from Kamatang’ombe Village, Traditional Authority Chisovya in Rumphi while the victim is yet to be identified.
Mkandawire, who was driving a Toyota Sienta registration RU 294 which operates between Mzuzu and Nkhata-Bay, is expected appear in court soon to answer a charge of causing death by negligence and reckless driving, according to police.
A post-mortem at Mzuzu Central Hospital (MCH) established that the victim died of severe head injuries, according to Tembo.
Police are appealing to the public to help identify the victim whose remains are being kept at MCH. n
