EcoGen Limited and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation for Food Security Assembly (Ebafosa) has donated a biogas power plant to communities in Traditional Authority Mazengera in Lilongwe District.

Speaking on Monday after the event at Mzingwa Village, Ebafosa voluntary consultant King Machira Tembo said they want to encourage communities to use bio technologies to promote ecosystem-based adaptation at village level.

He said the technology, can help people generate income through production of clean cooking energy and fertiliser.

“Since we are talking about sustainable development, we thought it wise to donate the biogas plant to empower people to generate income from selling the products from the plant.

“The biogas plant produces different products such as bio fertiliser which communities can sell or use in their fields, thereby saving money,” said Tembo.

Ebafosa youth vice-president Faith Zumazuma expressed disappointment with  low involvement of youths in protecting the environment.

“We need more youths to be involved in protecting the environment to create a better country,” she said.

Group village head Mzingwa said the biogas plant will create employment opportunities for youths and women in his area.

“I ask EcoGen Limited to install similar plants in other areas to protect the environment and create job opportunities for people,” he said.

Ebafosa is a country-driven policy action frame work for ecosystem-based adaptation established by the UN Environmental Programme in July 2015.

EcoGen Limited was incorporated in January 2021, but began as a voluntary research in 2018 to find out why biogas technology was not promoted in the country.
