Court denies man bail in stabbing case

The Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday turned down a bail application by Edgar Kulemeka who is accused of stabbing Sally Mkwezalamba.

According to Lingadzi Police Station spokesperson Foster Benjamin, who attended the court session, the accused, through his lawyer, applied for bail, saying he is not a flight risk since he surrendered himself to police.

Denied bail: Kulemeka

Benjamin said State prosecutor Robert Kufandiko, however, argued that there was fear that the accused might evade trial considering that he escaped after committing the act.

He said the prosecutor told the court that the accused might tamper with the evidence if granted bail.

The incident happened on August 11 this year at Area 18 in Lilongwe, but Kulemeka has denied the charge.

“Senior resident magistrate Chisomo Msokera agreed with the State, saying there is likelihood that the accused might escape and subsequently evade justice,” said Benjamin.

The case has been adjourned to September 13 2017 for the State to parade witnesses.

Kulemeka comes from Bembeke in Traditional Authority Kamenyagwaza in Dedza. n
