Records of former presidents accumulating wealth beyond their capacity have forced civil society organisations (CSOs)to call on Malawians to closely monitor President Joyce Banda and her senior government officials’ accumulation of wealth to cut the trend.

There are recent revelations that former president Bingu wa Mutharika accumulated more than K61 billion in a short period when his assets were valued around K150 million when he had just assumed power.

Speaking during a press briefing on Monday, Moses Mkandawire, who spoke for three civil society organisation such as National Integrity Platform, the Livingstonia CCAP Synod’s Church and Society Programme and Civic and Political Space Platform, he said looking at the past leadership accumulation of wealth Malawians have to wake up and guard their money.

“If we just keep on sleeping, leaders will continue to abuse government resources. So, the whole political leadership should be closely monitored,” said he said.

Responding to Mkandawire concerns, Minister of Information and Civic Education Moses Kunkuyu said: “Indeed there have been issues of corruption coming out, especially when leaders are out of power..Kuba kwa wina does not mean or entail that those occupying a similar position are doing the same.”
