CSOs launch Publish What You Pay campaign

Some civil society organisations (CSOs), led by the Citizens For Justice (CFJ), have launched the Publish What You Pay campaign which seeks to ensure transparency and accountability of revenue that Malawi is accruing from the mining sector.

Speaking during the launch in Lilongwe recently, CFJ board chairperson Margaret Sikwese described the campaign as a milestone in the civil society’s efforts to strengthen advocacy towards meaningful transparent and accountable governance in relation to revenue emanating from extractive industries in the country.

“It is pleasing to note that since the founding of the campaign in 2002 by the global civil society community, led by Global Witness to tackle the ‘resource curse’, the CSOs’ coalition has over the years grown to become a truly global network comprising many country-level civil society coalitions,” said Sikwese.

Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) deputy director Renneck Matemba, who was guest of honour, noted that the campaign would assist upgrade the capacity in mining sector.

He said ACB will support the campaign “because the bureau believes that civil society is an important partner in the fight against corruption”.

GIZ provided financial and technical support to roll out the campaign.
