Cyclone Chido-affected families to get support

Malawi Red Cross Society says it will reach out to 157 households affected by Cyclone Chido in Traditional Authority Kapeni in Blantyre District.

In an interview on Friday, Red Cross Blantyre district coordinator Innocent Chikuni said they want to meet people’s immediate needs through the support.

He said: “The emergency recovery activities seek to help survivors recover from the disaster and enhance their resilience to future shocks.

“We will support them with basic needs, healthcare, and rehabilitation of shelter, water, sanitation as well as hygiene to give them dignity and hope in time of their need.”

Chikuni said the targeted households will each receive mats, blankets, utensils and a solar lamp.

“Not only that, each household will receive K100 000 to help repair their damaged homes and they will also receive K80 000 for their basic needs,” he said.

On his part, Blantyre District Council chief planning officer Pearson Mphangwe commended Red Cross for supporting the affected households with relief items and money.

Meanwhile, some community members in T/A Kapeni have commended non-governmental organisations such as Red Cross that reach out to people during disasters.

Bunaya John, a community member, said such organisations help to build people’s resilience against climate change shocks.

“I ask my fellow community members to also follow weather updates to be prepared against disasters,” he said.

Cyclone Chido affected 46 017 people in 23 districts in the country in December 2024. Thirteen died and 29 sustained injuries while 227 were displaced.
