Cyclone Dikeledi to enhance rainfall

The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (Met) says Malawi will experience increased rainfall activities from tomorrow due to the influence of Cyclone Dikeledi.

In a statement yesterday, Met said the likelihood of the cyclone reaching Malawi is very low but its impact will be felt from Tuesday.

“Cyclone Dikeledi is expected to indirectly enhance cloudy conditions with rainfall activities over many areas which will be heavy at times, starting from the north progressing southwards,” reads the statement.

In its weekly weather update released yesterday, Met said the rains influenced by Tropical Cyclone Dikeledi will be experienced from January 14 to January 19 across many areas.

Cyclone Dikeledi is the second tropical cyclone to hit the southern Africa region in the current rainfall season after Cyclone Chido in December 2024.

According to the Met, Cyclone Dikeledi made landfall over northern Madagascar on Saturday and, as of yesterda, it was in the Mozambique Channel at a distance of 1030 kilometres from Malawi.

The cyclone was moving south westwards at a speed of 28 kilometres per hour and was expected to continue intensifying, possibly reaching the stage of an intense tropical cyclone.

In Madagascar, heavy rains and strong winds influenced by Cyclone Dikeledi have affected nearly 1 000 people.

In December 2024, Malawi experienced Cyclone Chido which entered the country on Sunday, December 15 2024, bringing strong winds and rains before exiting the next day into Mozambique through Neno District.
