Damascus Drama Group was on Sunday inaugurated as a company at Nanzikambe Arts Café in Blantyre.

Director of the company, Landson Chingeni, said they have changed from being a group to a company because they would like to be self-sustaining.

“Our hope is that, as a company, we will now be able to work as a business entity rather than just a group,” he said.

During the launch, Damascus staged a Chichewa play titled Chikondi cha Mayi. During the performance, the choice of language helped the actors to be natural.

At some point, the actors could even pick up and react to comments from the audience.

The level of suspense in Chikondi cha Mayi which becomes more pronounced as events unfold, was just amazing.

Chikondi cha Mayi is about a young man who, upon finding a fiancée in town, goes to his uncles in the village to break the news.

But the uncles disapprove and arrange a marriage between the young man and a girl from the village.

The young man marries the village girl, but a tragic end heightens the performance as the town girl kills the village girl and later kills herself.

Chingeni commended patrons for turning up in large numbers to witness the occasion.

“We are overwhelmed by how people have received us and we promise to give them more performances,” he said.

Hudson Chamasowa, Slyvester Kalizang’oma and Joseph Mazeze spiced the event with poetry recitals.
