DC calls on politicians to maintain peace

Mzimba district commissioner (DC) Rodgers Newa has urged political parties, candidates and supporters in the district to maintain peace as the country heads towards to September 16 General Election.

He said this on Friday at the end of a joint solidarity walk by Malawi Police Service, Malawi Prisons Service and Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services the National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust organised.

Newa commended Mzimba District for not registering cases of violence in its 13 constituencies.

“As stakeholders, we want this prevailing peace to continues, and at the same time, we are also ready to deal with any forms of violence,” he said.

On her part, Mzimba Police station officer Esther Msowoya said the security agencies are geared to provide security during and after the elections.

“We are also prepared to deal with any form of violence during the campaign, polling day and after,” she said.

Meanwhile, Nice Trust district programmes officer Aaron Luhanga said the organisation is raising awareness in the communities on the importance of promoting peace and co-existence among political parties and candidates.

“We will continue engaging people on the importance of desisting from violence,” he said.

According to Malawi Electoral Commission, Mzimba has 371 563 registered voters
