Mangochi district commissioner (DC) the Reverend Moses Chimphepo has asked development partners in the district to support projects aimed at fighting environmental degradation.

The DC said this in an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Tuesday on the sidelines of a full council meeting held at Mangochi Town Council Hall.

Chiphempo: Let us plant more trees

“Unlike planted trees, the survival rate of regenerated trees is very high, hence the need to adopt regeneration while still planting trees,” Chimphepo said.

He said Mangochi has experienced several disasters in the past due to deforestation.

Among other things, the full council meeting also discussed the introduction of a Drought Recovery and Resilience Project (DRRP), which will be implemented in the district to cushion the impact of disasters.

The project is expected to be implemented in areas where people were affected by the 2015/16 disasters.

The DRRP targets 200 000 people in 24 districts that were affected by disasters, including Mangochi.
