Aspiring members of Parliament (MPs) for Dedza Central on Monday outlined how they will contribute towards the uplifting of education standards in the area once voted into power.

The three, Willard Gwengwe of Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Jacob Kaumphawi an independent and Andrew Kowedza of Democratic Progressive Party explained their plans during a debate organised by Zodiak Broadcasting Station at Dedza Community Hall.

Responding to a question on how he will help to improve education standards, Gwengwe said education issues were in his blood, citing the Malawi College of Finance and Alice Gwengwe Private School established by his family.

“I will ensure that there are additional two secondary schools in each of the two wards. This will also include constructing primary schools and teachers’ houses,” he said.

On his part, Kaumphawi said he will use his status as MP to encourage fellow youths to pursue education.

“I will ensure that learners cover short distances to access education as I will facilitate construction of secondary and primary schools,” he said.

On the other hand, Kowedza said he will ensure that girls and other needy learners who dropped out of school get necessary support to return to school.

“It is sad to note that many learners, especially girls are dropping out of school, thereby being exploited in other people’s farms,” he said.

Besides education, the debate also covered topics on community development.

The Malawi Electoral Commission announced that campaign ended yesterday, November 14 at 6am.

About 47 713 registered voters are expected to take part in the by-election tomorrow.

Voting is expected to open at 6am and close at 4pm.

The vacancy in the constituency follows the death of Daniel Chiwere (MCP) in July this year.
