Delay to open markets irksMzuzu residents

Residents from Mchengautuba East in Mzuzu have bemoaned the delay to open two markets in the area, saying the situation is affecting their businesses.

The frustrated residents are now threatening to hold vigils at Mzuzu City Council offices to demand an explanation  as the construction of the markets was completed five years ago.

Speaking on Saturday during a meeting organised by Church and Society, Find Your Feet and Voice of Livingstonia, the area’s development committee secretary Evelyn Chisi said they have been asking the council to open the markets at Multicarrier and Target to no avail.

She said during their last engagement in 2021, the council pledged to operationalise the markets by December 1 2021.

Find Your Feet Strengthening Governance project officer Robert Ndovi asked duty-bearers to open the facilities.

Mzuzu City Council spokesperson Macdonald Gondwe confirmed that they delayed to open the facilities.

Mzuzu City Council has been revamping markets in residential areas to decongest the main market and to curb illegal vending.
