Electricity Supply Commission of Malawi (Escom) has said the upgrading of Nkula B machine number five, which started in August, will end by October 20 this year.

Nkula power station manager Steven Kayira said this on Tuesday during a media tour of the power station to appreciate progress made so far to upgrade the machine.

Kayira said Escom upgraded its machines at Nkula power station because maintenance was long overdue.

He said maintenance on machine number five, which produces 20 megawatts of power, has been one of the causes of intermittent power supply currently hitting residents and businesses.

“Nkula B has five machines which produce 100 megawatts of electricity in total. The electricity supply has, however, been affected with the repairing of machine number five which contributes 20 megawatts,” said Kayira.

Machines number four, six and seven have already been repaired, he said.

According to Kayira, machine number 8 will be the last to undergo maintenance which will include both rewinding of coils and excitation of magnets.
