Dossani Trust donates cholera drugs to Tukombo

Dossani Trust, a key partner of Nation Publications Limited Mothers’ Fun Run (MFR), has donated K4.1 million worth of cholera medication to Tukombo Health Centre in Nkhata Bay to support the ongoing response cholera outbreak in the area.

The donation was solicited by Mdauko Wa Atonga (Mwato), a Tonga heritage group, following the outbreak of cholera in the lakeshore district.

Dossani Trustee Karan Savjani, said they hoped the donation will save lives.

He said: “I was contacted in my capacity as a Trustee of Dossani and I was told of the immediate urgency of the situation. I was told that the situation needed urgent addressing as people were dying. We decided to facilitate the donation within 24 hours. We hope that the donation will save lives and also help assist the sick.”

On his part, Reverend Maxwel Mezuwa Banda, who is Mwato national vice-chairperson, said the donation will help alleviate the people’s suffering.

“The reason we thought of soliciting the donation is because many have succumbed to the disease. We believe in helping each other in times of need. Besides, this problem has affected our fellow Tongas; we had no choice but to do something and help,” he said.

Tukombo Health Centre in-charge Joseph Munthali said the donation will help in managing the situation at hand.

He outlined some sanitation challenges that need urgent assistance.

“We are facing sanitation problems. We use a solar-powered water pump for operation and when the weather changes, we run short of water supply. It could help if we can have a borehole to minimise the problem,” he said.

Dossani Trust makes donations of about K200 million a year to various causes. The organisation focuses on health and education, among other things
