Hell broke loose on Friday during primary elections for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Mulanje Pasani Constituency where six people, including Angie Kaliati and sitting member of Parliament (MP) Peter Nowa, were expected to battle it out.

The primary elections were later called off after disagreements arose over the voting arrangement, and the presence of Mulanje West MP and former Cabinet minister Patricia Kaliati who escorted her husband.

Other issues that dogged the primary elections included criteria to vet the electoral college which is drawn from constituency executive.

Sources alleged that some property at Chambe Secondary School in Mulanje was damaged before the election was called off.

Angie Kaliati confirmed the primary election was called off, but insisted that it was a pre-arranged strategy to frustrate him as front-runner.

“I will press on standing as an MP for the area. I have overwhelming support that is why there are tactics to prevent me from standing,” he said.

DPP primary elections in some constituencies in Mulanje, Thyolo, Nsanje and Chikhwawa have been marred by violence and have been postponed for various reasons.

DPP publicity secretary Nicholas Dausi, who has sailed through unopposed in Mwanza Central, could not immediately comment on the disruptions.

But senior party officials have accused a section of some members of fixing candidates at the expense of the electorate.
