DPP submits fresh MEC Commissioner nominee

Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) says Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has submitted another nominee for appointment to the position of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) commissioner following the rejection of Mayamiko Nkoloma.

President Lazarus Chakwera last week rescinded Nkoloma’s appointment made on July 24 2025.

Namalomba: We are still waiting.

OPC chief communications officer Geoffrey Kawanga said in a written response yesterday that there was communication from DPP to OPC challenging withdrawal of the appointment by the appointing authority.

He said OPC gave a response clarifying the legal basis and position that the appointing authority took to withdraw the appointment.

Said Kawanga: “Subsequent to this response, the DPP took a different tone and submitted a name for a third nominee that is currently being vetted in accordance with the Constitution and the Malawi Electoral Commission Act.

“Once the vetting of the said nominee is completed, the appointment, if all is complied with, will be made by the President.”

DPP spokesperson Shadric Namalomba refused to divulge any details but only indicated that they were waiting for feedback from OPC.

Secretary to the President and Cabinet Colleen Zamba, in a letter to MEC chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja on Sunday last week said the President’s decision to reverse the appointment was based on the fact that Nkoloma was a public officer.
