Kabwila: This is a threat to democracy

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) publicity secretary Jessie Kabwila has said United Democratic Front (UDF) is being swallowed by the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) following UDF leader Atupele Muluzi’s decision to accept a Cabinet post.

Kabwila has since described Muluzi’s move as “a threat to democracy”.

She said: “His [Muluzi’s] decision weakens the democratic fibre of the House. Democracy is about having a party that is in government and others in the opposition to balance the equation,”

According to Kabwila, Muluzi’s position does not help solve matters, considering he was one of the people who disputed the May 20 electoral results.

“We don’t know UDF’s stand now. Parties are known by where their members are seated, but now the UDF leader is sitting on the side of government [as a Cabinet minister],” observed Kabwila.

Meanwhile, Muluzi has been replaced by Balaka North legislator Lucius Banda as leader of UDF in the House.

Commenting on whether the party has been swallowed up, Banda said: “You must understand that [Jessie] Kabwila is new in the House; this has happened before, but UDF is alive and kicking.”

  1. madam Kabwila inu ndiye otsalila kwabasi! UDF’ positin if it is not obvuois to you it is to me! They want Malawi to progress! so they are willing to contribute to this progression and as Atupele said you can still contribute towards your goivenrm, ents progress whicl in oppsition. Isnt Atupele a clever boy, by working closely with DPP he will understand them better and so be abale to relate to them in a more meaningful way which ever way he decided to go!

    1. Kabwila is dead right here. UDF is indeed being swallowed by DPP thereby theating our democracy. Let’s not pretend we don’t know what is happening here. Atupele could help the govt while still on the opposition side as it has always been argued by different quarters b4. UDF MPs in the house are now like lost sheep in the desert.
