DPP urges supporters to remain calm
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has urged its supporters to remain calm and patient as Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) continues tallying votes for the September 16 2025 General Election.
Speaking to DPP supporters at the party’s regional office in Blantyre yesterday, DPP regional governor for the South Charles Mchacha said despite unofficial results showing their leader Peter Mutharika in the lead, only MEC has the legal mandate to declare the winner.

He said: “I know excitement is high because all signs are showing that our leader is leading. But let us not rush to conclusions. The only body that can announce the official results is MEC, and until then, we must remain calm, patient and disciplined.”
Mchacha reminded the supporters that the party has deployed monitors and legal teams at every stage of the process to safeguard DPP votes and stressed that any irregularities will be addressed through proper channels and not street confrontations.
He said Malawi belongs to all citizens and no one must destroy it because of politics.
Said Mchacha: “Our leader is a man of peace, and he believes in respecting the law. If we love him, we must show it by being peaceful and respecting MEC’s process.”
Some of the supporters said they would heed the call for patience.
“We are happy because our votes were not wasted. But we will wait for MEC. We don’t want to bring confusion,” said Janet Mandala, a DPP supporter from Mbayani Township in Blantyre.
