Three local artists, Mlaka Maliro, Ethel Kamwendo-Banda and Piksy, are set to travel to the United Kingdom to celebrate Malawi’s golden jubilee at an event organised by UK-based H&K Events.

According to a press release from H&K Events, the artists are supposed to perform on July 5 at the 5 Star Royale Suite in Birmingham.

In an e-mail interview, H&K Events chief executive officer Henry Baza said all is set for the show and the artists have confirmed their participation.

“This will be the official Malawi golden jubilee celebrations in England and we promise it will be the biggest and best Malawian event in the diaspora.

“Our objective is to promote Malawian music to the world stage and we are taking advantage of the Independence cerebrations to stage a big event for Malawians based here featuring the stars of their home country,” said Baza, adding that the show will fuse gospel and urban music.

On July 6, Malawi will celebrate 50 years of independence and Baza says Malawi has not remained the same in arts.

“We have improved in many areas including music and we have to celebrate the talents and our independence from colonial masters,” he said.

In an interview, the artists confirmed signing the deal for the trip.

Piksy, who is the only secular artist on the list, said he is geared for the trip and is talking advantage of the opportunity to sell his name.

Kamwendo-Banda, who will be in the UK for a third time, said she cannot wait for the day.

“They sent us contracts and we signed and sent them back and they have agreed to our demands. I am excited that they settled for my name and I cannot afford to disappoint them. There are many Malawians in UK and I want to show them how we have grown in our music and I will do my best to give them the best of me,” she said.
