Europe Covid-19 2nd wave frustrates Chilemba’s fight bid

Celebrated South Africa-based light-heavyweight boxer Isaac ‘Golden Boy’ Chilemba has attributed his failure to secure a bout to the Covid-19 second wave that has hit Europe.

After the cancellation of his bout against Russian Fedor Chudinov in September, Chilemba had hoped to secure another bout before the end of the year.

He said: “My manager [Jodi Solomon] has been trying to organise another bout, but it looks certain that we have lost out this year.

“The Covid-19 second wave in Europe has even worsened the situation.

Chilemba: I am continuing with my workouts

“We are now just looking at securing one hopefully early next year. For now, I am continuing with my workouts to keep in shape.”

The 33-year-old former IBO world champion last fought in December 2019 when he beat another Russian Alexander Kubich on a unanimous points decision.

The ‘Golden Boy’ boasts 26 wins (10 TKOs), seven losses (one TKO) and two draws.

Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board president Lonzoe ‘Defector’ Zimba said he understood Chilemba’s frustration considering that by next month, it will be a year since he last fought.

He said: “That is a cause for worry because it might affect his world ratings.”

Chilemba is currently not within the top 15 rated boxers.
