Former Super League star Gerald Chavula has made a mark in the inaugural 14-team Carlsberg Six-A-Side Social Indoor Soccer League at College of Medicine (CoM) Sports Complex where he has scored four times in two games to steer NedBank to the summit of the log table.

Chavula, 24, scored a brace in NedBank’s 5-1 thrashing of UGI last week. He also scored another brace when his team beat Macra 3-2 on Thursday.

The young brother to Flames’ winger Moses Chavula is now topping the scorers’ chart and has helped NedBank to lead Group A on six points.

As his team faced Macra on Thursday, the former Mighty Wanderers striker, who emerged runner-up to Aggrey Kanyenda on the scorers’ chart in the 2006 Super League season, slotted in two master-class goals that set tongues wagging among the spectators and his swift turns on the ball always caused quakes in the boots of opposing defenders.

Macra led 2-0 in the first- half through Nzeru Saulos’ brace, but Chavula’s two superb goals bridged the gap in the second segment before his captain Gift Zalira notched the winner.

To score his first goal, Chavula turned two defenders inside out with some fantastic dribbles before blasting a twirling shot that sent the goalkeeper the wrong way. His second strike was even more appetising; he made a quick surge with the ball, jerked to let his markers lose balance and made an easy tap into the net.

“I am just delighted to have helped my team win the two games. I will try my best to continue scoring so that my team can lift the trophy. I am also planning to return to active football next year,” he said.

According to CoM sports officer Chris Siliya, the league will run for 12 weeks and there will be some individual prizes for top scorers and man of the match on top of the team prizes.
