Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has extended Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili’s contract to December this year.

In an interview on Thursday, the association’s competitions and communications director Gomezgani Zakazaka said the resolution was made by FAM executive committee at its quarterly meeting last weekend.

He said the former Flames assistant coach’s immediate tasks will be to prepare the Scorchers for the Cosafa Women’s Championship.

Said Zakazaka: “The other competition on the cards will be the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations [Wafcon] qualifiers.”

Unilike the previous deal which was under the earn-as-you-work arrangement, Weekend Nation has established that FAM intends to offer Fazili an outright six-month deal.

Newly-elected National Women’s Football Association president Adelaide Migogo, who is also a FAM executive committee member, was not available for comment, but Fazili confirmed having been communicated about the decision.

He said: “We are yet to finalise the deal, but in essence I have accepted and I am excited.

“This shows that FAM has confidence in me and I am grateful and I need to repay them by raising the bar.”

The former Flames forward said his targets include winning the Cosafa Women’s Championship and going beyond the preliminary stages of Wafcon.

“Achieving that will be an indication of progress,” he said.

At last year’s Cosafa tournament, the Scorchers failed to make it past the group stages while in the previous year, they were runners-up after losing to guest side Tanzania 1-0 in the final
