Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has promised to tighten security at Bingu National Stadium (BNS) during this afternoon’s Airtel Top 8 final between Mighty Wanderers and Ekhaya FC.
The assurance comes amid concerns that the facility has numerous security loopholes that lead to poor gate management.
The last time the venue hosted a high-profile match, the NBS Bank Charity Shield between Mighty Wanderers and FCB Nyasa Bullets, there were concerns over porous spots in the facility’s fence which allowed some fans to sneak in.

However, FAM club licensing and competitions manager Clement Kafwafwa in an interview yesterday said they will tighten security to seal all loopholes.
“Security, gate management and access control will all be tight,” he said.
Kafwafwa also urged fans to come early to avoid congestion.
He said: “Most of the time the congestion is caused by fans arriving late for the match. Sometimes fans arrive just before the kick off.
“We also urge supporters to buy tickets in good time and enter the stadium early to avoid congestion.”
FAM has promised fans a memorable experience as the two sides clash for the first time in a cup final.
“Fans should expect an exciting, competitive and well-organised Airtel Top 8 final. We encourage supporters to come in large numbers and enjoy the match,” said Kafwafwa.
He,, however, urged supporters, players and club officials to exercise fair play.
He said: “Our message is simple, discipline, fair play and respect. Support your team passionately, but respect opponents, match officials and fellow supporters.”
Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture spokesperson MacMillan Mwale in an interview also said the facility is ready to host the final.
He said all the loopholes in the perimeter fence, which some fans were using to enter during the NBS Bank Charity Shield between Bullets and Wanderers in April, were fixed.
Meanwhile, sponsors Airtel Malawi have organised several activities before the final match, including a live performance by renowned artist Lulu.
