Nyamilandu:The target is to have a new coach by the end of January next year

FAM has said it will involve Fifa in the recruitment process of the next Flames coach to ensure a fair and transparent process.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu on Thursday said if all goes according to plan, the target is to have a new coach in place by end of January next year so that the successful candidate can have enough time to prepare for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

“We want the whole process to be fair and transparent. An advert will be flighted and the [FAM] technical subcommittee will sit down to short-list four to five suitable applicants.

“Then shortlisted candidates will undergo rigorous [oral, technical and tactical] interviews and we are planning to ask Fifa to send one or two technical people to be involved in the process because we

are mindful that if we opt for locals, then there could be an element of bias,” said Nyamilandu.

The FAM president said they are optimistic that Fifa will accept their request because the same process was also used in the recruitment of the technical director and marketing manager.

“There was a technical committee that helped to come up with suitable candidates,” he said.

Soccer commentator Ben Chiwaya described the idea as brilliant.

“That is the professional way of doing things and FAM should have started that longtime back, but better late than never because every journey starts with a single step.

“The process will help in that there will be no short-cuts in identifying a suitable coach and the element of bias will also be eliminated. The involvement of Fifa will add credibility to the process,” said Chiwaya.
