Fans’ insults on Flames annoy FAM

Some fans’ insults showered on Flames players through FAM’s official Facebook page have annoyed the football governing body to the effect of threatening to shut down the online page.

The Flames were subjected to insults and criticism after their mediocre performance against Chad’s Sao away in Nd’jamena where they lost 3-1 last weekend, but scraped through to the final preliminary round of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations courtesy of an away goal rule having won the first leg 2-0 at home a fortnight ago.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda said while the page is open to constructive criticism on Flames’ performance and preparations, they feel some soccer followers are going overboard by insulting players and technical officials.

“Some people vomitted verbal tirade on players and officials which was totally unacceptable.

“Yes, we know that being a national team, the players and technical staff are open to criticism, but as we have always said, such alterations should be constructive,” said Nyirenda.

The FAM CEO said the main purpose of establishing the Facebook page was to “create a platform where they can get advice and suggestions from soccer followers on how we can improve the game. It was also meant to assist the media to easily access information.”

In its statement posted on the page, FAM said the Flames do not deserve such insults considering that they managed to qualify for the next round which was not an easy feat to achieve.
