Farmer builds teacher’s house

A 45-year-old farmer in Mzimba has constructed a teacher’s house at Magogo Junior Primary School in the district to woo teachers to come and teach at the school.

The farmer, Sungani Mkandawire, constructed the house after winning K2 million in the TNM Ufulu@50 Promotion conducted in 2014 to celebrate the country’s 50 year’s of independence.

Mkandawire, who was represented by his wife Maria during the handover ceremony of the house on Thursday, said after winning the prize, his family decided to construct a teacher’s house after noting that the school only had two teachers, a development they observed was affecting the quality of education at the school.

By building a teacher’s house the family was convinced that it will have contributed to promoting education in the area as teachers will be comfortable to teach at the school since they will have proper accommodation.

Magogo Primary School head teacher Witman Makwakwa said lack of infrastructure and shortage of teachers have been the major problems at the school.

He said construction of the teacher’s house will help in addressing infrastructure problem as well as shortage of teachers.

TNM regional distribution manager (North) Yamikani Bakuwa, said Mkandawire and his family have played a great role in promoting education in the country.

He said education is a key to success and by constructing a house, teachers will have proper accommodation. n
