fazili to ring the changes

Coach Lovemore Fazili is today expected to introduce changes in Malawi Women’s National Football Team’s second international friendly against Lesotho at Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre.

The Scorchers easily swept past the visitors 3-0 in the first strength-testing match against the Mehalalitoe at the same venue on Friday.

At half-time, Scorchers were already up 2-0, thanks to Asimenye Simwaka’s brace before Sabina Thom, who captained the side in the absence of Tabitha Chawinga, netted the third in the second stanza.

This afternoon’s match will be the eighth international friendly for the Scorchers this year in preparation for the Women’s African Cup of Nations (Wafcon) second qualifier against Angola in October as they also recently played against Zambia, Morocco and Ghana twice apiece.

In an interview ahead of the second friendly, Fazili said he will give a chance to players who did not play on Friday.

He said: “We are just trying to get good coordination between the regulars and the new players, so with the result, I am impressed.

“I will give a chance to other players who were not featured today in the second friendly game.”

For the first time in seven matches, the Scorchers registered a clean sheet.

Fazili commended the defensive line and goalkeepers for showing remarkable improvement.

The two friendlies marked the seventh time that Scorchers have played this year.

Scorchers took on second-ranked South Africa and fifth-ranked Zambia twice apiece between February and April this year before playing Morocco and Ghana in June.

In February, the Scorchers lost 2-0 to Zambia’s Copper Queens in their first friendly before registering a 3-2 victory in the second match.

The Scorchers lost 3-0 and 2-1gainst hosts South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in April.

They then lost 4-2 to hosts Morocco and 3-1 to Ghana in Casablanca in June.

The Scorchers coach  thanked FAM for the friendlies, saying the team has had the best preparations for the qualifier against Angola.
