FDH Bank pledges to extend cupdeal

FDH Bank plc, sponsors of the FDH Bank Cup, have pledged to extend sponsorship of the tournament which has a year left on the initial three-year deal.

The bank’s managing director Noel Mkulichi made the commitment in an interview with Zodiak Broadcasting Station on Sunday soon after the final of the fifth edition between Silver Strikers and Mighty Wanderers at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

The Bankers won the match 5-4 on post-match penalties after playing out a one-all draw in regulation time to cart home K45 million winner’s purse while the Nomads got K20 million.

Said Mkulichi: “We believe that our investment objective towards football, especially the Standard Bank Cup, has been fulfilled.

“Be assured that we will continue…We will continue sponsoring this one.

“What we need to do is to revisit the contract and see whether we [should] renew it or improve it here and there.”

He said the motivation for sponsorship comes from their customer’s love for football.

“That is why we ensure that apart from serving them in the bank, they should also enjoy in social circles.  We want them to be  able to go out there and enjoy the game,” said Mkulichi.

He also said the sponsorship is meant to help develop the standards of football in the country.

The bank, which  bankrolls the cup to the tune of K250 million, has been sponsoring the tournament since 2021.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Fleetwood Haiya thanked FDH Bank plc for the continued sponsorship.

“It has been a good journey. We are going into the final year. I am sure they have seen the power and value of football,” said the FAM boss.

“We have given them the reason to continue and they have assured us that they will continue.”
