Raging fire gutted some property in a warehouse for TIL Limited, one of the subsidiaries of major tobacco company AHL Group, at Kanengo Industrial Site in Lilongwe on Saturday afternoon.

AHL public relations manager Teresa Ndanga said the company is investigating the cause of the fire.

Ndanga: An assessment
is underway

She said: “The fire started around 4pm. An assessment is also underway to estimate the worth of the property we lost.”

Ndanga said the Lilongwe Fire Brigade officers responded quickly and worked hard in putting out the fire, which occurred at a time most of the company employees were on holiday.

Lilongwe Fire Brigade station officer Amin Katasefu said the fire officers fought the inferno for four hours before it was put out.

He stated: “It is commendable that the SOS (emergency) call reached us in fairly good time. This was a very serious fire incident and the destruction could have been massive had our officers not moved swiftly to prevent the fire from spreading to the entire warehouse.”

TIL Limited specialises in rehandling tobacco, selling hessian sacks and the purchase of agricultural products.

In existence since 1936, AHL has experienced massive growth through its diversification agenda which has seen it shift from being a predominantly tobacco marketing company to a group of diversified companies with strategic business investment portfolios.

AHL Group was formerly known as Auction Holdings Limited until February, 2015. It is one of Malawi’s key strategic partners for local and international investors.

The group wholly owns Malawi Leaf Company Limited (MLCL), TIL Limited, Agricultural Trading Company (ATC), AHL Chemicals and Steel Limited (ACSL) and AHL Commodities Exchange (AHCX).
