First Lady, State House women give QECH K10m supplies

First Lady Monica Chakwera and State House women on Saturday donated various medical supplies and food and non-food items worth K10 million to the paediatric and maternity wards at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre.

The donated items included cotton wool, gauze, paracetamol, surgical gloves, face masks, blood pressure monitors, bandages, blankets, 30 bags of maize flour, and 100 kilogrammes (kgs) of beef, among others.

Speaking on behalf of the First Lady, presidential adviser on safe motherhood Dorothy Ngoma thankful to the QECH dedicated staff for their commitment and tireless efforts in delivering high-quality care to patients, especially expectant mothers.

She said: “The First Lady acknowledges the challenges faced by both mothers and staff in delivering services; hence, the donation.”

QECH controller of hospital and administration service Sipho Nyasulu said as a referral hospital with a capacity of 766 beds, it experiences a significant daily demand, registering up to 1 000 admissions per day.

“The donation will solve some problems we face,” he said.
