Five in Lesotho for Zone-4.5 U-16 Chess tourney

Five junior chess players are in taking part in Zone-4.5 U-16 chess tournament in Lesotho.

The five, Khwima Gondwe, Praise Salima, Quincy Mukhwapa, Clara Mtumbuka and Shalom Kapende, were selected to represent Malawi after their outstanding performance in Presidential Initiative on Sports (PIS) chess tourney in May.

Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) publicity secretary Alfred Chimthere indicated that the five were selected based on their outstanding performance at the Presidential Initiative on Sports (PIS) chess tourney which was held in May this year, at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe.

Gondwe and Salima are students at Chichiri Secondary School while Mukhwapa is at Blantyre Baptist Academy.

Mtumbuka and Shalom Kapende, who are competing in girls’ category,  are students at Lilongwe Demonstration and Kamuzu Barracks primary schools, respectively.

Speaking on behalf of the players, Salima promised to do well.

“It’s good that we are representing the country. We are prepared to do the country pride at the tournament,” he said.

Chessam national schools coordinator Magret Ngugama has accompanied the five players.

Chessam president Susan Namangale said the trip is part of the association’s policy to promote the youth in the sport.

“These are competitions that can provide us forum and expose our potential on the international stage as it is one of the strategic direction for Chessam in the next five years,” she said.
