Flames to face Mali, Comoros in Saudi Arabia

The Flames will face Mali and Comoros during their 10-day camp in Saudi Arabia in preparation for the Cameroon 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals next month.

This was disclosed during a press conference addressed by Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu and technical director Marian Mario Marinica, who will be in charge of the team.

Marinica: It wasn’t easyfunding

Nyamilandu said the Flames will face Mali on December 30 before lining up against Comoros on January 4.

“There are also possibilities of playing training matches against top Saudi Arabian clubs,” he said.

During the press conference, Marinica and coach Meck Mwase said they are satisfied with the the provisional 30-member squad that leaves for overseas camping in Saudi Arabia this afternoon.

Said Marinica: “It was not easy under Covid-19 situation to come up with this provisional squad, but we are satisfied with the players’ commitment so far and we are confident they will give their all during the overseas camping as well as at the Afcon finals if they make the final squad.”

Mwase said they have put aside a 14-player reserve list in case they might need some replacements after the overseas camping through injuries and other unforeseen circumstances.

The provisional squad comprises: Goalkeepers: Enerst Kankhobwe, William Thole and Charles Thom; Defenders: Stanley Sanudi, Gomezgani Chirwa, Mark Fodya, Limbikani Mzava, Dennis Chembezi, Nickson Mwase, Sankhani Mkandawire, Lawrence Chaziya, Paul Ndhlovu and Peter Cholopi; Midfielders: Robin Ngalande, Yamikani Chester, Schumacher Kuwali, Peter Banda, Francisco Madinga, Zebron Kalima, John Banda, Charles Petro, Chimwemwe Idana, Chikoti Chirwa, Micium Mhone and Gerald Phiri Jnr; Strikers: Richard Mbulu, Khuda Muyaba, England-based Henry Kumwenda, Frank Gabadhino Mhango and Stain Dave.

The reserve list has goalkeepers Brighton Munthali, Clever Nkungula and Richard Chipuwa. Defenders are Nickson Nyasulu, Blessings Mpokera, Alick Lungu and Norchard Chimbalanga. They will be on the waiting list alongside midfielders Taonga Chimodzi, Mike Mkwate, Lloyd Njaliwa, Misheck Selemani and Blessings Tembo. Strikers are Hassan Kajoke and Vincent Nyangulu.
