At least 43 current and former football players will tomorrow (Thursday) complete their three-month skills development training under Technical Entrepreneurship and Vocational Training (Teveta).

According to Southern Region Informal Sector Training Providers Association (Soristpa) chairperson Isaac Chitseko, the graduation ceremony is scheduled to take place in Blantyre on November 29.

The sportspersons honed skills in various fields such as plumbing, motor vehicle mechanics, electrical installation and refrigeration. They were attached to Blantyre-based workshops, namely Phambala Electricals, Maya Motors, Wiltridge Motors and Chitseko Wood and Steel Engineering for practicals.

“We offered them on-the-job training and this has helped the players to understand their jobs better. AfterFriday, these players will be ready for employment and we urge companies to sample their expertise,” said Chitseko.

One of the trainees, former Flames and Big Bullets striker Ganizani ‘M’bobo’ Malunga, who has taken up plumbing, said they would appreciate if they are given starterpack equipment and loans to enable them to stand on their own.

“I am now a complete plumber. I just need proper equipment and a loan so as to start my own business. We have learnt a lot of skills through the training and we are ready to start our work,” he said.

But Teveta senior training programme specialist Lucy Yekha, whose organisation signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Football Players Association to facilitate the short-term course at a ‘reasonable fee’ said they will make a firm stand on the players’ request for starterpacks and loans at a later date.
