Former diplomat John Chikago joins MCP

Former Malawi Ambassador to Japan John Chikago has today dumped the United Democratic Front (UDF) and joined Malawi Congress Party (MCP) describing its leader Lazarus Chakwera as “God sent”.
Speaking during a press briefing held at MCP Headquarters in Lilongwe, Chikago said MCP is the party that is offering hope to Malawians.
“I was once a member of the MCP and I left in 1993, when one of my relatives was murdered in the Mwanza case. During that time, the only way of getting to the bottom of this was by going out of the party and so we I did,” he said.
Chakwera announced that he was back in the party: ” I was one of the people who championed multiparty democracy.”
Chikago, who has been in Foreign Service mission for nine years, said after observing Malawi politics for some time, he realized that, most parties in Malawi do not offer hope, as they are family parties.
“Chakwera offers hope and his policies seem workable. He is a man of God and knows what he is talking about. We need him to give us direction and that is why, out of all the parties, I thought I should return to my party,” he said.
