German envoy for more maternal health support

German Ambassador Jurgen Borsch says government and its partners need to do more to reduce neonatal and maternal deaths in the country.

In an interview on Saturday during the Mother’s Fun Run (MFR) in Ntchisi District, the envoy hailed the Nation Publications Limited (NPL) initiative, saying it has contributed to reducing neonatal and maternal deaths nationwide.

Borsch: We have to join forces

Borsch said of the NPL initiative launched in 2005: “Thirteen years ago, somebody had a vision of joining forces with the private sector, development partners and everybody to fund health services. There is still so much to do. We have to join forces to fight neonatal and maternal deaths.”

In a separate interview, NPL chief executive officer Mbumba Banda said there are many health facilities that need support.

She said: “Our aim is to see that no mother and no child should die while giving birth.”

This year’s Fun Run raised K167 million, part of which will be used to buy a 33 kilowatt generator for Ntchisi District Hospital. n
