Gesd project constructs teacher’s house in Dedza

Kantambo Primary School head teacher Jonathan Maluwa has commended Dedza District Council for constructing a teacher’s house at the institution.

The house, which cost K59 million under the Governance to Enable Service Delivery (Gesd) project, is the second at the school which has 10 teachers.

In an interview on Tuesday, Maluwa said the house raised hopes that learners may start performing better in Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education (PSLCE) examinations as a Standard Eight teacher will occupy it.

He said: “Our learners have not been doing well in national examinations because of teacher absenteeism during the rainy season.

“This is why we decided to allocate the new house to our Standard Eight teacher so that he can dedicate his time to the candidates for them to be selected for secondary education.”

Maluwa said 23 out of the 25 learners who sat the 2023 PSLCE passed, but none was selected to secondary school.

Dedza District Council acting director of planning and development Lotti Makina said they responded to the school’s concern that teachers were travelling long distances to the school.

“As a council, we try as much as possible to use Gesd funds on projects that will change people’s lives and Kantambo Primary School is one needy school whose learners and teachers need help,” he said.

The school opened in 1994 and has 985 learners.

Gesd is a World Bank-funded performance-based grant that enables district councils to implement various projects such as construction of school and road infrastructure.
