Giddes film on the cards

Social media personality Pemphero Mphande has disclosed plans to produce a documentary for musician Giddes Chalamanda.

He said this on Wednesday when he gave an update on his health.

The veteran musician was admitted to Chiradzulu District Hospital last week but is doing fine now.

Said Mphande: “We wish to notify the public that Giddes Chalamanda is doing well and is showing signs of improvement. Once he is back on his feet, we will produce a documentary of his life and career.

“Potential sponsors or directors of the documentary are welcome to reach out to me.”

He thanked all who prayed and financially supported the 94-year-old artist during his time in hospital.

Mphande said they will not stand in his way if he wants to continue performing since he loves music.

Art enthusiast Emmanuel Maliro said it would be great to preserve Chalamanda’s life because he has contributed a lot to Malawi music industry.

“This is great news. It is important to preserve and enable the future generation learn about our music heroes such as Giddes Chalamanda who has made immense contributions towards the country’s music,” he said.

Chalamanda is one of Malawi’s veteran musicians who embarked on his music career around 1960s. He is one of the early musicians to have recorded his music on Malawi Broadcasting Corporation’s (MBC) Radio One.

In the twilight of his career, Chalamanda was under the acoustic duo of Edgar ndi Davis with whom he toured Malawi and visited the United States of America.

Some of his popular songs include Akazi ndimawaya, Che Mmeli, Buffalo Soldier, Nthawi zina ndimalota and Liny.
