Goshen-FAM Women’s Football kicks off

The Goshen-FAM National Women’s Championship kicks off this afternoon at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre with  three-team play-offs that will identify two more outfits to join the six already qualified quarter-finalists.

The play-offs will involve Southern Region side Mighty Wanderers Queens, the Centre’s Silver Strikers Ladies and the North’s Topik Sisters, who finished third in their respective regions.

The games were initially planned to start yesterday but they were rescheduled to ensure the safety of all stakeholders following precautions from the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services regarding Tropical Cyclone Jude.

National Women’s Football Association (NWFA) general secretary Lustica Gondwe in an interview said now all is set for the play-offs.

“The play-offs will start this afternoon and will conclude on Sunday,” she said.

Gondwe said at the end of the playoffs, two top teams will join six already qualified others for the last-eight clashes on Monday and Tuesday.

Southern Region champions FCB Nyasa Bullets Women and runners-up Kukoma Ntopwa Women made the quarter-final grade alongside the Centre’s champions Ascent Academy and second-placed Civil Service Women. The North will have champions Moyale Sisters and runners-up MK Academy.

Before press time yesterday, Topik Sisters’ team manager Levi Mhone and his MK Academy counterpart Khumbo Sibale said they were making arrangements for their trip.

“We have not yet finalised our travel arrangements. If all goes well, we might travel in a lean squad in a small car because our funds might not be enough for a full squad,” he said.

Topik and MK Academy, who are both based in Mzuzu, cast doubt on their participation in the competition due to financial constraints, claiming the K1.5 million subvention that the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) offered to each qualified team was not enough to cover return travel costs to Blantyre, accommodation and food.
