Govt abolishes quota system at tertiary level, reintroduces JCE exams

Government has abolished quota system of selecting students into public universities, and reinstated Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) exams, Minister of Education Science and Technology William Susuwele – Banda has announced.

Making the announcement at a press briefing in Lilongwe, Susuwele-Banda said quota system has been abolished to give chance to deserving students who fail to access tertiary education because of the system. He also cited the creation of more space in public universities as another reason for the abolishment.

The Minister also said Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) exams have been reinstated with immediate effect and that the first JCE exams will be administered in 2021.

According to Susuwele-Banda, the decision has been reached to reduce the spirit of laziness among students.
