Former Mighty Mukuru Wanderers coach Mark Harrison, who is now with UD Songo of Mozambique, has set his eyes on Chitipa United duo of captain Chris Lwemba and goalkeeper George Chikooka.

The Cabora-Bassa-based Moçambola side has already approached the TNM Super League outfit, which stunned both Wanderers and champions FCB Nyasa Bullets 1-0 on the way to fourth-place finish in the just-ended season, to enquire about the two players.

Chitipa United general secretary Watson Kabaghe in an interview yesterday confirmed the development.

Wanted by UD Songo: Lwemba

He said: “They enquired about the players, but we advised them to write us officially. They are yet to do that. Once they write us, then we will be able to talk more on the issue.

“But as a club we have no problem with that. We would not stand in the players’ way. We are here to promote these players.”

The two were influential in the team’s impressive performance and Chitipa United coach McDonald Mtetemera said he was not surprised that they are attracting foreign clubs’ interest.

He said much as he would have loved to keep his squad intact, he would not stand in their careers prospects.

“These are players that we have groomed to this level. They contributed a lot in our campaign in the just-ended season. But as a coach, I don’t believe in standing in a player’s career,” said Mtetemera.

Chikooka had 13 clean sheets while Lwemba was influential in the team’s campaign, featuring in 28 matches.

Apart from the Chitipa duo, Harrison has also targeted Wanderers defender Lawrence Chaziya and striker Christopher Kumwembe for the outfit which also has Malawi Flames captain John CJ Banda.

The British coach resigned at Wanderers after a trophy-less season, citing both internal and external reasons.

Soccer analyst Charles Nyirenda said Harrison has a good eye for local talent, having spent a season in Malawi with Wanderers.

“I can see him signing a couple of Malawian players. I don’t see the players even undergoing trials because he knows them,” he said.
