Hope for Griffin Saenda and Aquatic Centre

There is hope for the Griffith Saenda Sports Complex and the Aquatic Centre after government has announced that it has allocated funds in the new budget towards the completion of these two stalled projects.

Work halted at the two sports facilities in 2022 due to financial constraints breeding fear that the sports infrastructure will degenerate into ruins.

But in an interview on Friday in Lilongwe, Minister of Youth and Sports Uchizi Mkandawire said there has been an allocation in the midterm budget towards the completion of the two projects.

The minister, however, did not disclose as to how much money has been allocated towards the works

“It’s presumptive because the budget is yet to be approved in Parliament I need to check the figures again. Work will resume as soon as the funding gets done

“You will access the figures  when they are  public documents and as such everyone has access to them,” said Mkandawire.

The Griffith Saenda Sports Complex and the Aquatic Centre were touted as flagships of the 2022 African Union Region Five games which Malawi hosted.

But architectural floors saw stormy rains flood the Griffin Saenda during while games were in sessions. On the other hand, the Aquatic Centre developed faults with the interlocking bricks being submerged in water.

The developments forced the Parliament’s Transport and Public Infrastructure Committee led by Mkandawire who was the chairperson of the committee pay an inspection visit to Parliament in January 2023.
