The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (Icam) annual lakeshore conference has opened in Mangochi with a call to accountants to champion the implementation of Malawi 2063, the country’s long-term development plan.

In his keynote address, National Planning Commission director general Thomas Chataghalala Munthali said accountants have technical expertise to advise on the bankable projects the country has to implement to achieve the long-term development plan.

“The accountants are best placed to do this. The nitty gritty of these will require the strong presence of accountants,” he said.

Icam president Moffat Ngalande called on accountants to operate in line with MW2063.

“Accountants have the ability to shape the economic landscape of this country,” he said.

Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants president Yande Mwenye urged accountants to be proactive, saying: “Our roles extend beyond the numbers. We are catalyst of accountability.”

The three-day conference is being held under the theme ‘Creating value, building a sustainable economy towards Malawi 2063’.

The conference has attracted more than 1 300 delegates.
