Needy students from Malawi College of Health Sciences have petitioned Parliament to consider amending the 2015 Act of Parliament to include students from the institution to become beneficiaries of the Higher Education Students Loan.
Presenting a petition at Parliament building in Lilongwe, a representative of the needy students Davidson Mkandawire said the institution was not included just like other public institutions to be benefiting from the government loans.
He said Government on the onset excluded the Malawi College of Health Sciences because it only offers certificates and diplomas and not degree programs.
Mkandawire said Government has been subsidising students loans until recently when it stopped leaving more needy students destitute, hence the request.
The students also want the institution to fall under the Ministry of Education as opposed to current scenario when the institution is under the Ministry of Health.
Vice chairperson of the education Committee of Parliament Ephraim Nayeja who received the petition on behalf of Parliament said relevant stakeholders will be summoned to find a lasting solution to the problem.
