Independent presidential hopeful shares vision
Economist Milward Tobias says he is vying for the country ’s presidency in the 2025 Tripartite Elections on an independent ticket to change the political landscape by governing the country without a political party.
Briefing the media in Lilongwe yesterday, he said in 2025 he will be on the ballot under Nzika Movement which is open to every Malawian who understands his ideology.
Tobias argued that ushering political parties into power promotes advanced stake and candidate captur e because party gurus and supporters feel the president is obliged to give them special attention.
He said: “This is why you see corruption and plunder rising immediately a new government under a political party is ushered in. Party members feel it is their time to feast.”
On how his government would deal with corruption and plunder, Tobias said an independent president is not tied to any forces which may restrict him from disciplining misbehaving officials. He said: “I don’t need to go through the whole list of examples but you have seen serious crimes being committed by prominent officials which either die at investigation level or are completely dismissed.
“Go deep and dig, you .” will find that maybe those involved were behind the president’s election so he has no power over them, sometimes it will be senior party officials who are more powerful than the president
The presidential hopeful said his administration will turn around the economy by promoting trade and industr y, agriculture through the Mega farms concept and job creation to improve people’s incomes.
In an interview yesterday, political analyst George Phiri said Tobias’ ideology is ideal in dealing with issues of wastefulness in government, but said it would be difficult to implement it in Malawi unless people understand the meaning of State and president capture.
“It is true and I support his ideology only that he needs to do more to make people understand him. For those who already understand what State and president capture means, they will understand him well,” he said
