Malawi President Joyce Banda on Sunday gave Nkhata Bay Assemblies of God Church K1 million (about $3 333) towards construction of a church and a pastor’s house in the district.

Banda, who attended a fundraising gospel show at Katoto Secondary School hall in Mzuzu without prior notice, said: “I thought of coming here, even without any invitation because it is good to thank God every time. I believe that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. As such, I want to assure the pastor that he is not alone in doing the work of the Lord.”

The President said it was pleasing to see the youth at the forefront in doing the God’s work.

The First Gentleman, retired Chief Justice Richard Banda, donated K500 000 (about $1 666) whereas Cabinet ministers, People’s Party (PP) and government officials also made their donations towards the project.

Resident pastor for Nkhata Bay Assemblies of God Church, the Reverend Alfred Chaponda-Mwale, described the President’s gesture as a great miracle, saying they did not expect her to attend the show.

He said her attendance is an indication that the President loves God.
