Pledged to solve housing problems: Banda

The Commander-In-  Chief of the Malawi Defence Force (MDF), President Joyce Banda, has assured MDF that government will construct new houses for officers as one way of finding a lasting solution to accommodation problems in MDF.

The President gave the assurance in Salima on Friday when she commissioned 140 new officers at the Malawi Armed Forces College (Mafco).

She was responding to MDF Commander General Henry Odillo, who earlier said lack of accommodation is preventing MDF from recruiting more officers.

“I have heard your request commander Odillo. I am aware of the accommodation problem within the MDF and my government is working on that. We are working with the Chinese government to construct more houses and the project will start soon.

“It is not on for five children to sleep in one small room. In my tour of military facilities, I have noted that [accommodation] problem and we will work on finding lasting solutions,” she said.

Banda also pledged to provide computers and also transportation to MDF.

She also advised newly commissioned officers to maintain professionalism.

“The MDF is known worldwide for its professional conduct wherever they serve or are deployed. I urge you to emulate this and protect the image of our army. For those of you who are married, I advise you to be faithful to your wives even when you are deployed in foreign missions,” said Banda.

In his speech, Odillo warned the newly commissioned officers not to engage in politics.

“This institution is non-political. We do not take part in politics or side with a political party. We serve the government of the day. I urge you to respect the civilian authority and desist from taking part in politics. Our duty is to protect our territory and support the Malawi Police Service and the Immigration Department in maintaining security in the country,” said Odillo.

The newly commissioned officers include military personnel from Zambia, Mozambique and Namibia.

Zambian Defence Force commander and senior officers from Mozambique and Namibia witnessed the passing out parade.
