Journalists, FDH Bank in landscape restoration 

FDH Bank plc and the Association of Environmental Journalists (AEJ-Malawi) have called for more partnerships and investment in the restoration of the country’s degraded landscapes.

The two institutions jointly conducted a tree-planting exercise and climate justice awareness campaign at Kang’oma Primary School in Lilongwe on Saturday.

In his remarks, FDH Bank plc senior manager for corporate and institutional banking Damiano Chimwala commended AEJ-Malawi for its relentless efforts in getting climate justice messages across and demonstrating best practices in environmental conservation.

He said FDH Bank plc was moved to donate 30 000 tree seedlings to the association because of the groupings’ commitment and consistency on forest restoration.

Chimwala said: “‘The bank’s green initiative, launched last week, seeks to plant one million trees and we are happy to partner with AEJ-Malawi in the realisation of this important goal.”

On his part, AEJ-Malawi president Mathews Malata assured the bank of the association’s strong commitment to monitor and ensure that all newly-planted trees are well looked after.

“The private sector involvement in environmental conservation has been very low and we think the FDH green initiative is one of the many private sector led initiatives we need to have and support in the country,” he said.

Over 400 trees were planted within the school’s premises during the campaign.

Last week, the Forestry Department said over 34 million trees have been planted since the start of the 2021/22 National Forestry Season.
