K1.5m reward to trace Njauju assailants
Malawi Police Service (MPS) has dangled K1.5 million ($3 333) as a reward for information that would lead to the arrest of assailants who brutally murdered Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) director of corporate services IssaNjauju a week ago.
National Police spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo said yesterday the K1.5 million reward was coming from police coffers under the criminal investigations reward fund.
The fund was established last year to encourage the public to provide law enforcers with crucial information that would lead to successful arrests and prosecution of criminals.
Said Manjolo: “We want to motivate the public to provide us with pertinent information that will lead to successful arrest and conviction of perpetrators. These criminals live with us in the communities and, as police, we cannot be everywhere that is why we have these rewards.”
River sand miners found Njauju’s lifeless body half-buried on the banks of Lilongwe River behind Presidential Villas in the capital city’s Area 44 on July 2 2015.
His official vehicle, a Toyota Hilux double-cabin pick-up, was found burnt to ashes at Mtsiriza in Lilongwe.
Njauju’s brutal murder has sent shockwaves among officers working in agencies investigating and prosecuting corruption in the country.
In Sunday’s edition, our sister newspaper, Nation on Sunday, reported that ACB officers and some staff working in the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) have expressed fear and demanded security in their quest to establish the truth about fraud and corruption cases, among others, in the public sector.
Government through Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Samuel Tembenu has since said it is considering a comprehensive review of security of ACB officers and public prosecutors.
