Standard Bank is dangling K1 million that will be rewarded to outstanding journalists in the coverage of this year’s Standard Bank Knockout tournament.

The bank’s head of marketing Chimwemwe Matonga unveiled the package during a press briefing held in Blantyre on Friday.

He said this year’s media competition will focus on promoting high-quality sports journalism across multiple mediums.

He said the 2014 version of the 2014 knockout competition offers additional categories of online and photography.

“The media component of the 2014 Knockout competition offers expanded scope and focuses on promoting professionalism and integrity amongst the sports journalists,” he said.

Award categories are best print, radio, television and online journalists as well as best photo-journalist.

“Each category winner will receive K200 000. And unlike in the past, there will be no runners-up,” he said.

On the exclusion of runners-up, Matonga said: This year’s competition seeks to promote high-quality sports journalism and output. The independent panel of judges will be looking for the very best and finest in the field of football journalism, which is a major industry worldwide,” he said.

Matonga also commended sports journalists and their media houses for the support they are giving in the coverage of the tournament
