Kabambe links poverty to corruption, tribalism
UTM Party president Dalitso Kabambe says Malawi is failing to make progress because successive administrations since 1994 have been practising cronyism, tribalism and corruption.
Speaking when he addressed a rally at Masintha Ground in Lilongwe on yesterday, the UTM Party leader said once ushered into power, his administration will do away with these vices which have been Malawi’s biggest setback.

He said due to corruption, government coffers have been continually drained of resources without doing their intended work.
Said Kabambe: “Instead of appointing capable Malawians into positions, we have been appointing based on tribalism, cronyism. Every government has been perfecting this bad practice. As a result, we have been performing badly economically. Corruption is another vice that has kept us from developing.”
Among other promises, he said the UTM Party will also allocate meaningful resources in key sectors such as mining, health, education and even in district councils, adding that mining will be allocated K500 billion in the first financial year to develop a number of mines nationwide.
Said Kabambe: “We are going to allocate another K500 billion every year into industrialisation to facilitate the opening of manufacturing companies, thereby substituting imported products with locally manufactured and also creating jobs for the people.
“Every year we will put K100 billion in all district councils. This money shall be for development in education, water, health and other sectors.”
In her remarks, UTM Party presidential advisor Patricia Kaliati called on Malawians and other political parties, especially those who were part of the Tonse Alliance, to support UTM Party’s bid for the presidency in the September 16 General Election.
Hinting that there was an agreement that UTM Party would lead the next government, she said: “We are here to ask for the fulfilment of our promise as per what we signed at Kamuzu Institute for Sports. We are saying that this is that UTM Party now, support us.”
